Outback Steakhouse Nutrition Facts and Healthy Menu Options
Outback is a restaurant you really have to be careful at. They only recently started releasing their nutrition information after feeling pressure from public interest groups like the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Although we couldn’t find a printable/downloadable version of Outback Steakhouse nutrition facts online (as of November, 2009), you can access their nutrition facts by going to their website. Let’s start with the appetizers. The infamous Bloomin’ Onion, which they say serves 6 people but can easily be consumed between 2, contains over 1,500 calories, 84 grams of fat, and 5500 mg of sodium! This is nearly a days worth of calories and fat and over 2 days worth of sodium … just in a single appetizer! Perhaps you want the Cheese Fries instead? These will set you back 2,200 calories, 157 grams of fat, and 57 grams of saturated fat (over 3 days worth)! Now, let’s say you skip the appetizer and opt for the Outback Special 12 oz. steak, loaded baked potato, and house salad with ranch dressing. Here’s the damage from this popular artery-clogging meal: Calories: 1409.9 Total Fat 76.7g Saturated Fat 35.5g Sodium 3721.1 mg And how about eating on “the lighter side” and getting the Chicken Caesar Salad? This salad contains a whopping 907 calories and 60 grams of fat! So what do you do when that certain family member insists on going to Outback? Check out our recommendations below for the healthiest menu options Outback Steakhouse has to offer, and your waistline will thank you later.
Outback Steakhouse: Outback is one of the more difficult restaurants to eat healthy at. Stick to the choices below to save yourself countless numbers of calories (and pounds). For all main courses, tell your server you would like it prepared without butter! Nearly all of Outback’s main courses are slathered in butter, adding tons of unnecessary fat and calories. They do offer a “no-butter” option so be sure to ask: Appetizer: • Seared Ahi Tuna (small): 162 calories, 10.5g fat, 1g saturated fat, 675mg sodium Main Courses: • Grilled Chicken on the Barbie & Fresh Seasonal Veggies (cooked without butter): 387 calories, 3.5g fat, 1g saturated fat, 1211mg sodium • Grilled Chicken on the Barbie & Sweet Potato (cooked without butter): 753 calories, 7g fat, 1g saturated fat, 1355mg sodium • Outback Special 6 oz. Steak & Fresh Seasonal Veggies (cooked without butter): 282 calories, 8g fat, 3g saturated fat, 678mg sodium • Outback Special 6 oz. Steak & Sweet Potato (cooked without butter): 648 calories, 12g fat, 3g saturated fat, 533mg sodium • Teriyaki Marinated Sirloin 9 oz & Fresh Seasonal Veggies & Sweet Potato (cooked without butter): 889 calories, 16g fat, 5g saturated fat, 2083mg sodium
The Bottom Line: All in all, Outback Steakhouse is one of the worst restaurants out there in terms of offering healthy menu options. Case in point: one of the healthiest options on their menu above (the Teriyaki Sirloin with veggies and sweet potato) still has nearly 900 calories and an entire days worth of sodium! When you must indulge in Outback, stick to one of the choices above, with fresh veggies and/or a sweet potato as sides. Always remember to order everything without butter, or you’re liable to double the amount of calories and fat you’re consuming. All-in-all, it’s best to avoid Outback and find another option.
