Healthy Breakfast Recipes

Here are some of my favorite delicious and easy healthy breakfast recipes. Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day - it should be your largest meal and should consist of a good balance of carbs, protein, and fat. I usually start the day off with one of the easy healthy recipes below, a cup-sized portion of fresh fruit (bananas, oranges, apples, or berries), and a glass of skim milk or a cup of green tea. Enjoy!

As mentioned, try to incorporate all the major food groups in your breakfast. Here are my top healthy breakfast tips if you want to lose weight:

1. Don't ever skip breakfast.
If you're going to skip a meal, this shouldn't be the one. Breakfast provides your fuel for the day and most of the calories you are consuming will get burned off throughout the day. Choosing the right balance will help stop cravings for junk food as well.

2. Eat protein for breakfast.
Eating egg whites, skim milk, chicken and turkey sausage, low fat cheeses, etc. will help curb your appetite and slow digestion throughout the day.

3. Eat complex carbohydrates.
Eating a serving of complex carbs such as whole wheat bread, whole grain cereal, oatmeal, or high fiber fruits for breakfast helps regulate your blood sugar levels, control hunger, and provides essential nutrients and energy for your body.

4. Eat egg whites.
A recent Saint Louis University study found that people who eat eggs as part of their breakfast consume fewer calories throughout the day. Be careful with the yolks though because they are high in fat and cholesterol. I recommend not consuming more than 5 egg yolks per week (but eat as many egg whites as you want).
