Heart Healthy Breakfast Recipes

Here are some of our favorite delicious and easy-to-make healthy breakfast recipes. Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. It should include a good balance of protein, fat, and carbs.

Studies have shown that people who consistently eat a healthy breakfast lose more weight than those who don't. In addition, people who choose quality protein (like eggs and lean meats) and whole grains over refined carbohydrates for breakfast are able to burn more calories and maintain higher levels of energy throughout the day. Enjoy!

Here are our top healthy breakfast tips if you want to lose weight:

1. Don't ever skip breakfast.
If you're going to skip a meal, this shouldn't be the one. Breakfast provides your fuel for the day and most of the calories you are consuming will get burned off throughout the day. Choosing the right balance of foods will help stop cravings for junk food as well.

2. Eat protein for breakfast.
Eating egg whites, skim milk, chicken and turkey sausage, low fat cheeses, etc. will help curb your appetite and slow digestion throughout the day.

3. Eat whole grain, complex carbohydrates.
Eating a serving of whole grain, complex carbs such as whole wheat bread, whole grain cereal, oatmeal, or high fiber fruits for breakfast helps regulate your blood sugar levels, control hunger, and provides essential nutrients and energy for your body.

4. Eat eggs.
A recent Saint Louis University study found that people who eat eggs as part of their breakfast consume fewer calories throughout the day. Be careful with the yolks though because they are higher in fat and cholesterol. Egg yolks do contain many vital nutrients, so don't get rid of them altogether. Limit yourself to around 1 egg yolk per day (but eat as many egg whites as you want).
