However, one aspect of diet and skin health that is not often explored is how your blood-sugar levels can affect your skin.

The Science Behind It

Here’s a breakdown of the science behind how this works. Basically, when you eat foods that contain a high level of sugar, it causes your insulin levels to spike. As a byproduct of insulin, enzymes are generated. These enzymes attack and destroy collagen and elastin, two proteins that are foundational for having (and maintaining) healthy skin.

Collagen is the primary building block for almost every type of tissue in your body. It is what helps replace dead skin cells with new ones. Elastin helps tissues to “snap back” into their original shape after being stretched, just as the name suggests. The destruction of these proteins is what leads to skin that is wrinkled and sagging.

Avoid Processed Foods

According to many Waco dermatology experts, along with various other specialists in the field such as those at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, processed foods are identified as being among the leading culprits of introducing extra sugars into our diets.

Several of the worst are processed flour which is a main ingredient in white breads, frozen meals, and soft drinks. Not only do these types of foods contribute to obesity and a host of other health problems, but they also negatively affect the tissues in the body, including your skin, by destroying the proteins collagen and elastin.
