When people ask me, “What are the best places to buy healthy food?” my first answer is usually either a) your local farmers market, or b) directly from the farmers. This isn’t always possible for you though if you live in an area like I do that gets cold, snowy winters.
So here are my top picks for the best places to buy healthy food, so you can eat healthy every season of the year.
1. Farmers Markets
Farmers markets are the absolute best place to find healthy food grown by local farmers. It doesn’t get much better: fresh, delicious food that’s cheap and supports your local economy.
During the spring and summer months, I buy as much food from farmers markets as possible: vegetables, fruits, eggs, chicken, grass fed beef. There’s even a guy that sells salmon that he catches in Alaska in-season at my local market (thanks, Dan the Salmon Man).
To find a farmers market near you, go to one of the following two sites:
2. Direct From the Farmer
Buying directly from farms near you is another great way to get healthy food straight from the source. It requires a little more work than going to farmers markets, since you have to drive to the farm, but the reward is totally worth it. You get to see where your food comes from, take your pick of the freshest food available, and save money because you’re buying direct.

3. Specialty Grocery Stores
Most urban and suburban communities now have specialty health stores that cater to those of us who want better, healthier food. There are even large chain grocery stores like Whole Foods in most states now. Do a quick Google search for “healthy grocery stores” to see if there are any specialty grocery stores near you.
Shopping online for healthy food (including produce and other perishables) is now easier and more affordable than ever. Here are some great places to buy healthy food online:
- True Foods Market
- Shop Organic
- Eden Organic
Organic Produce Delivery Services (do a Google search for “produce delivery” in your state. Here are just a few I found):
- Planet Organics
- Full Circle Organics
- Door to Door Organics (on a side note, while writing this post, I signed up for Door to Door Organics to see what they’re all about. They currently deliver to Michigan, Colorado, Chicago area, Kansas City area, and Tri-State area. If you want to sign up, send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll send you a coupon code for 50 percent off your first order. I don’t get anything out of it … but it’s a great deal for you if you live in one of these areas).
- The Fruit Guys
5. Regular Grocery Stores
Regular grocery stores can still be a good place to buy healthy food. Many big box stores now even sell organic fruits and vegetables. Just stick to the outer aisles and stay away from the processed, packaged stuff normally located in the inner aisles of the store.
